Please complete the three activity sheets under Short Stories: "The Yellow Wallpaper." Put answers in your short story google doc.
HW for 5/31/17
- Continue skimming through the story. Put a D next to anything that is Direct characterization and an I next to anything that is Indirect. USE STEAL for indirect too. is that Speech, Thoughts, Effects, Actions, Looks?
- Then, add one quote to the chart you made for STEAL. Put this in your short story google doc folder
Classwork for Friday - if we do not finish for HW
- Define unknown vocabulary words in your notebook. Will check tomorrow.
- Choose one of the following questions. Answer it in your short story google doc folder:
- Waverly’s family moved to the US from China. What are some of the obstacles immigrant families must overcome when settling in a new country? Consider what new things you would have to learn if you moved to China.
- Have you ever had a conflict with your family or felt like they did not understand you? Write and provide details about the conflict: who was it with, what was it about, was it resolved, how was it resolved?

- Read & annotate Amy Tan’s “Rules of a Game” f you are not taking the grammar test you should read and annotate this story that has first person POV and focus on these questions as you are annotating.
- Is her tone objective or subjective?
- Is the narrator reliable or unreliable? What makes him/her that way?

Read and annotate Ernest Hemingway's "In Another Country". Then, answer questions 1,2,3,6,7. Put your answers on the short story google doc.

Classwork & HW for Monday 5/15/17
- Go to my weebly: ELA 10 → Short Stories → Link to short stories
- Read “Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe. If you already read this have them read a different story.
- Make a copy of it or copy and paste it to make some annotations on the side
- Then, for HW they should answer the following questions
- Do you see any literary elements like foreshadowing, dramatic irony, verbal irony, setting? . Please list the element, provide a quote to show it and explain how Poe uses this literary element to create a specific tone.
- Then, write a few sentences on what the tone of the short story is. Select a quote that shows the tone and discuss how the tone is shown through this quote. Use DIDLS!

Please answer the following question in your notebook / Google doc. Write at least 3 - 4 sentences.
- Poe believed that every word in a story should contribute to a single emotional effect. Why do you think he carefully described the luring of Fortunado into a trap and the details of the murder itself, but only casually mentioned the motive or the crime in the first sentence?

What should I include in this final draft of my essay?
1) A complete Introduction with:
- A hook (optional)
- A topic sentence to introduce the book, author, main protagonist and main topic
- Relevant Background Information (use your body paragraphs to help guide this section)
- Your Thesis / Argument! It should be the last sentence of your essay. It should state your argument. It should be specific and have different parts that you can use for your topic sentence.
2) Multiple Body Paragraphs with:
- Topic sentences that match the parts of the thesis in the order they are presented in the thesis
- Evidence from primary and secondary sources (quotes and a strong analysis). The quotes will vary depending on your argument. Use as many quotes as you think you need to support your argument. (Rule of thumb 1 quote per paragraph or not less than 3 quotes in the whole essay)
- 1:3-4 quote to ratio analysis
- Make sure you introduce and contextualize quotes!!!
- Use transitions to link your ideas
- Don't forget to use in-text citations.
- Don't forget to use 3 vocabulary from your literature circle google doc! Bold the vocabulary in your essay.

5) A title on the top of your essay - centered
6) Your name, date, class on the top left
7) The essay should be double spaced
8) Make sure you proofread so you are Communicating with Clarity and are Precise with Grammar!!

For winter break (week of February 20th, 2017) - Go to the tab that says: ELA 10 -> Literature Circles on this website. Click on the button with your book on it. Read at least two secondary sources. You can use the sources in the buttons or find your own sources. You need to read and annotate the sources. If you can please print and annotate. Regardless of whether you print it you must also create a google doc and write a page analysis of the article.
Here is what you should include:
1) a summary of the article that is paragraph long
2) One quote that is reveals the argument of the article or a quote that is simply interesting to you
