Discerning The Catcher in the Rye
In the first few months of ELA we have been discerning The Catcher in the Rye by reading responsively by reading, re-reading, taking notes on themes, characters, vocabulary words etc. This is all part of planning to have meaningful discussion around the book by collaborating and to eventually form conclusions that you will write for your 5 page argumentative essay.
RECAP: We have been:
PLANNING + DISCERNING to COLLABORATE + CONCLUDE = write an argumentative essay (Later outcomes will include communicate, argue, be precise).
So for SLCs show the planning and discerning work you have been been doing while closely reading The Catcher in the Rye. You can show a section from your notebook that demonstrates your ability summarize effectively, to read with attention to details, reference quotes and analyze them thoroughly in order to form strong conclusions about characters, themes, etc.

- Shared outcome and outcome Target(s) I need to work on with a piece of evidence or a rubric that shows what I need to work on (Take a photo or link digitally), when possible.
- Reflect: How can I improve this outcome target or continue to succeed?

- Annotations of notes (Catcher or Lit Circles)
- Grammar Quizzes
- Argue paragraph
- Literature Circle Vocabulary or Discussion Rubrics
- Reading quizzes
- Reflection on discussions / participation (with collaborate outcome)
- Dictionary in the Rye with the Be Precise Outcome
Things you should have included for 1st SLCs:
- Photos of pages of your notes. (It could 2 pages or more) This photo should be from a page that shows how you are reading responsively and deeply. So pick your best notes!
- The Plan and Discern rubrics and how you are demonstrating that you are Meeting or Exceeding the the Standard
- Show the rubrics
- Write a summary of the outcome target
- Reflect on what you are doing well and any next goals you have
